Alpacas were first intorduced in the United states about 20 years ago. Since then the industry has worked hard to develop the infrastructure necessary to carry it forward. The Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association (AOBA) serves as the national breed organization. The Alpaca Registry, Inc. (ARI) is a state of the art, DNA based registry that tracks pedigree of the national herd. The Alpaca Fiber Cooperative of North America (AFCNA) is a true agriclural cooperative created with the purpose of collecting the national clip.
In recent years we have also seen the creation of a number of independent mills that porcess alpaca fiber. The industry is robust and growing.
