Re:AFCNA Elections, Etc. - 2006/02/27 10:25 Being at the Snowmass auction,,asked the question to a number of breeders, both large and small,,mover and shakers to the average farm,,will there be a fiber market? Large breeders,,,NO small breeders,,there better be!

No surprise there.

At least one "mega" breeder has been quite clear about their intent to model the alpaca industry on the Thoroughbred industry.

From the looks of it, they are succeeding.

It amazes me that the same "big" breeders (or should I say, "established" breeders?) who predict zero fiber industry continue to push the fiber qualities of alpacas in their marketing.

There will be a fiber industry. AFCNA is so close to making great things happen I can taste them - that is if we can remain solvent for the next 12-24 months.

Will we get rich? Hardly.

Can we establish a viable primary agricultural segment? Most certainly! And it is closer than you might think.

Re:AFCNA Elections, Etc. - 2006/03/10 15:47 Personally I will not get any benefit from AFCNA. I have been a member since the beginning and all it has done is to cost me money.

I want to have my fiber processed and then use it. I don't have that option. If I want yarn I have to donate mine and purchase skeins. I want cones.

While I really would like a coop that would help me in my chosen business it doesn't look like I will have one.

It would help if it were non profit too.

Re:AFCNA Elections, Etc. - 2006/03/10 17:00 You might be very surprised by what is in the works. Among other things in the pipeline

US produced designer yarns
US produced scarf/hat sets
US produced blankets/throws
US produced socks and slippers

And, a new structure that, Lord willing, will actually return money to producers in proprotion to their participation.

Co-ops can not, by definition, be non-profit. Unfortunately, they can be unprofitable, just as any business can.

Re:AFCNA Elections, Etc. - 2006/03/13 15:42 John, how close are we to getting an alpaca brand/logo so we can build value and differentiate ourselves from inferior quality competition?
