Re:#2 Suri Network Chanllenges Futurity Judge Choice - 2006/03/26 16:15
I find myself with mixed thoughts on this subject. On the one hand, some of our most knowledgable people are successful breeders of long tenure, and so have ties (direct or indirect) to large numbers of animals.
In that sense, too broad an interpretation of the rules would not be in anyone's interests.
On the other hand, when one accepts a role in an industry leadership position, one has to accept that it will potentially create conflicts with one's non-leadership activities.
It is a difficult balance at best.
From what I have seen, the basis of this complaint really goes back to the fact that the judge in question has used the sow records of alpacas they might have judged in the promotion of the sire, or grandsire, of those alpacas, which the judge still owned. If that allegation is true, then I would think it represents a lapse of judgment on the part of the judge in question, and might well open them to some form of sanction.
In such cases, better to remain silent. The reputation of the sire or grandsire will be established without color advertisments, by simple word of mouth.
What the judge might lose in sort term income would be mroe than made up for in avoiding these types of conflicts.
