Breed Standards Participation - 2006/12/30 17:45 12/30/2006

Attention Calpaca and SOJAA members,

As a fellow alpaca owner breeder I urge you to take the time to review the information sent to us by the Ad Hoc Peer Review Committee for Proposed Breed Standards.

I concur with the opening sentence……..”This is one of the most important letters you will receive regarding the future of our alpaca industry.” The process provides an opportunity for active alpaca owners and breeders to participate in, and shape the outcome of, the Proposed Breed Standards topic. Ultimately our collective action or inaction, will determine if we see value in our industry adopting a breed standard, and what that breed standard looks like. Whether you support, oppose, or are not sure about the adoption of a Breed Standard, one thing is sure…..the process is going to go on, with or without you.

I have been following the posts regarding Breed Standards on many different forums. Not surprising this is a very controversial and emotional topic….ranging from we (alpaca owners and breeders) can influence the outcome to “what does it matter?” the process is a sham and cover-up for the motives of a select (albeit powerful) few. Apathy and distrust of the “system” is running rampant in our society……from “corporate America” to our system of government (look at the dismal turnout for elections). Unfortunately our society is filled with fear and distrust that has permeated the mindset of many and fueled the “us vs. them” mentality.” This mindset, as well as the opposite, is fully expressed in the various forums.

I plan to participate in a process that is inviting our input. I prefer to think that my input can make a difference and I trust the process. I encourage you to take action and let your thoughts and opinions be known. Keep in mind whether you think you can or cannot (have an influence on the outcome), either way you are right.

Sincerely and respectfully submitted,

Dianna Jordan

Re:Breed Standards Participation - 2007/01/03 19:21 I agree Dianna. If a breed standard is adopted, then I certainly want to have my input reflected. John Merrell
