Parasite Management - 2006/02/02 20:52
Would there be interest amongst the group in hearing a presentation on parasite management in livestock?
Dr. Snyder of Myrtle Verterinary Clinic (Myrtle Point, OR), who is also president of Oregon Tilth (http://www.tilth.org/) has put together a nice presentation on the subject. He has been asked to do this presentation as far away as the East Coast.
He covers natural control and interventions for parasite management. Among other things he covers:
1. Common parasites and their lifecycle 2. Pasture managment and its role in parasite control 3. Multiple species grazing and its role in parasite control 4. Alternative treatments for parsite control - fact and myth 5. Testing for parasite load 6. Chemical parasite control and proper protocols for their use
Dr. Snyder is very concerned about the overuse of chemical wormers. He discusses the development of drug resistant parasites, noting the role of camelids in the development of resistant parasites in M-worm areas of the country that are then exported to other areas of the country.
Dr. Snyder was our vet when we were located on the South Coast. He is a progessive thinker, very knowledgable, and a lover all animals great and small.
I met with him at the annual tilth conference a couple of months ago and he said that he would be willing to do the presentation for mileage and a small fee. (I am not sure what small is though)
Thoughts?
